Annual Message to the College Community

by Sister Karen M. Kennelly

I he well-known and much-cited Dr. Alexander Astin, a
professor of higher education at the UCLA Graduate School
of Education, addressed the Mount St. Mary's College
community at the convocation that opened our academic
year. He touched upon some of the findings published in his
latest book, What Matters in College? Dr. Astin's research
reveals that interaction with faculty is one of the most
significant influences on a student's college experience. We
honor all our faculty, and their singular dedication to
teaching both in and out of the classroom, in this annual
report issue of the Mount St. Mary's College Magazine.

Through the generous support of the many friends of the
College listed in these pages, we are proud to be able to
attract and retain an outstanding faculty. The investment in
excellence in teaching at MSMC is critically important to
our continued growth — and growth has been a hallmark
of our last year.

Our enrollment of 1,843 students in associate,
baccalaureate and graduate degree programs represents an
all-time high. Overall freshman enrollment was up by nearly
20 percent last fall. Those entering students who rank near
the top of their high school graduating classes — and they
are many — have chosen a small, Catholic liberal arts
college for women over some of the nation's best-known
larger institutions offering them admission.

New programs designed to extend the opportunity for a
quality liberal arts education to new groups of students
account for part of the enrollment surge. The Weekend
College, less than two years old, is enrolled to capacity.
Working adults travel to the Chalon campus every third
weekend to immerse themselves in studies and classwork for
up to 10 hours a day. They have an opportunity to earn a
baccalaureate degree, majoring in either liberal arts or
business. The Associate Degree in Nursing program is also
attracting its maximum enrollment, with students attending
classes in an evening/weekend time frame.

The College has embarked on an ambitious set of
projects: renovation of the Coe Memorial Library at
Chalon, and the construction of a new library facility at
Doheny. Our goal for state-of-the-art library facilities is a
challenging one, but will allow the educational experience
at Mount St. Mary's College to take a giant step into the
future. More information about the MSMC library project
will be shared with you in the next issue of the College

Despite the economic hard times (not to mention natural
disasters) that have plagued Southern California, our
endowment has grown to nearly $25 million. Fundraising in
support of the library has progressed well. Our requests to
foundations have met with an encouraging response,
from a lead gift of $5 million from the Thomas and
Dorothy Leavey Foundation, to smaller but very
substantial gifts from the Weingart Foundation,
Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation, and Ahmanson
Foundation. We look forward to enlarging the scope
of the library capital fund drive in the near future.

Dr. Jackie Doud, academic vice president and dean of the faculty, with Sister Karen in the
main reading room of Coe Library. The library renovation will not alter the vaulted

Funding for student financial aid continues to be at the
top of the Mount St. Mary's agenda, and a priority for all
of American higher education. In light of federal and state
cutbacks for support of scholarships, we are more
concerned than ever that qualified students have access to a
Mount education. Building our scholarship endowment
remains a major goal of the College's fundraising efforts.

We are proud of the accomplishments of our alumnae,
whose lives and work are so eloquent an expression of the
College's highest purpose. Founders Day 1993 recognized
two alumnae of extraordinary achievement and involvement
with community, Janice Mclntyre-Poe '71, and Nancy
Reiley Morgan '65. Please give some thought to nominees
for this year's Outstanding Alumna Awards, and mark your
calendars for the College's annual birthday festivities on
October 9, 1994.

For the fifth year in a row, Mount St. Mary's College was
named among the top ten regional liberal arts colleges in
the West in the annual U.S. News and World Report college
survey issue. We have held firm in the number two position
(number ONE in California!) for the last two years. Among
the criteria used in this ranking of the nation's top colleges
are academic reputation and faculty resources.

The MSMC professors profiled in this issue
represent a teaching faculty that is the lifeblood of
the thriving community of Mount St. Mary's
College. As we celebrate their commitment and good
work, we have much for which to be proud and
grateful. Our deepest thanks go to all of you who
have helped us achieve so much. ft

Honor Roll '92-'93

Dr. Jim Delahanty

Chair, Department of History and Political Science

Whenever his maternal grandfather came to dinner, the
discussion topics permitted at the Delahanty table in
Trenton, New Jersey, were confined to history and current
events. To participate in the conversation, Jim delved into
the study of history and politics, the disciplines that would
one day shape his career.

Today, Dr. Jim Delahanty serves as chair of MSMC's
history and political science departments, a position he has
alternately shared with Dr. Ronald Oard for the last 20 years.

Delahanty attended Rutgers University, where he
obtained his bachelor's degree in history in f 957, and a
master's in political science in 1958. In 1962, he became a
doctoral candidate in political science at UCLA; in 1979 he
earned his doctor of jurisprudence from Loyola Law

Delahanty 's wife, Jane, is an MSMC alumna. She
recently received her MBA from the University of Dallas
Graduate School of Management.

Jim began his career as a part-time instructor at MSMC,
and accepted a full-time position in 1961. "I have always
enjoyed being in front of a classroom," he says. "For me it's
a constant learning process, because I learn what my
students are concerned about from the questions they ask."

His favorite among the classes he teaches is constitutional
law. "There have been so many changes made by the
Supreme Court, especially with regard to the status of
women. Each time the class meets there are new and
challenging issues to discuss."

"It's easier to live with a bad decision with a good
rationale than a good decision with no rationale
— which is, of course, a definition of tyranny."

Dr. Marie Egan

Chair, Department of Religious Studies

Iflarie Egan became a member of the Immaculate Heart
Community in 1955, and was deeply influenced by the
sisters' vision of what good teaching could accomplish. She
earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in English
at Immaculate Heart College, where she subsequently
taught for nearly 10 years. Egan was one of the first two
women to enroll in the School of Sacred Theology at
Catholic University of America in the mid-60s, and holds a
doctorate from that institution.

Teaching Christian ethics poses special challenges, Egan
says, because students sometimes see it as a study of
behavioral expectations, mere rules and regulations. "That
can turn them off. But the point is to help them discover
what they value, as individuals, and bring that to a
conscious level." During her current sabbatical, she will do
research in the area of feminist theology and ethics, with
plans to develop an upper-division course in Christian

Egan wants the young women she teaches to understand
what they believe and why they believe it. If people respond
freely, that becomes the essence of faith. "It has to be free
or it's not worth anything," she says.

"We should freely choose what is good for ourselves, for
others, for the Church, for God — because we see that it's
good, not because somebody told us to," Egan maintains.
"It's much more difficult to teach freedom and
responsibility than it is to teach obedience."

"You have to have a little bit of the showman

about you — we're all hams at heart. But the real

excitement in teaching comes from knowing that

you are having an impact on students."

Sister Teresita Espinosa

Chair, Department of Music

ister Teresita Espinosa, born to a musically talented
family, vividly remembers how much she disliked practicing
piano as a young child. "My parents had the wisdom to
introduce me to a teacher who, along with sharps and flats,
taught me to love, understand, and feel the music within
me," she says. By the time she was 12, she was giving
concerts and performing on the radio.

She was sent to Mount St. Mary's College, where she
obtained her bachelor's degree in music, with a
concentration in performance, in 1959. She began to teach
at the Mount and continued her studies at the University of
Southern California, where she earned both a master's
degree and a doctorate in music education. She has served
as the chair of the MSMC music department since 1971.

On an average day, Espinosa's classes range from music
appreciation and guided experience in the arts for non-
music majors to specialized courses in theory, music
education, and history for students who are planning
musical careers. "Each class and every student is a new
experience. My goal is to inspire in them a love and
understanding of music that will always be a part of their

Her commitment to excellence in teaching has led her
around the world in search of approaches to the study of
music that reflect the multicultural dimensions of the
College's student population.

"A good teacher never stops learning. We live in
the most ethnically diverse country in the world;
we must continually expand curricula to include
the riches of our cultures, building on the basic
sense of unity that brings us all together."

Dr. Anne Wilcoxen

Assistant Professor, Department of Education

Anne Wilcoxen arrived at teaching after dedicating many
years of her professional life to working with children with
a wide range of language disorders. She deliberately chose
the L.A. public school setting for her work as a speech
pathologist, preferring not to be in a clinic. "If you want to
be effective and make a difference in a kid's life — aside from
being a parent — you have to go where the kids are, and
they're in school!"

It was the pre-Proposition 13 era, and Wilcoxen explains
that California was the first state to set up classrooms for
students with severe language disorders — students who
might otherwise have been categorized as brain damaged or
retarded. But when funding for what had become a world-
class program ran dry, Wilcoxen decided to broaden her
view of the many conditions that can put a child's ability to
achieve educational potential at risk. She earned her
doctorate in educational psychology from UCLA in 1984,
and did extensive research on the home lives of
developmentally delayed toddlers, and teacher-pupil
interaction in special education classrooms.

She joined the MSMC faculty in 1990, and directs the
College's programs in elementary and special education.
Wilcoxen's background in special education has proven
particularly helpful in light of California's new
credentialling requirements for teachers who work in
bilingual classrooms. "Many of the strategies being used
now with limited English students originated with special
education — the two disciplines really feed each other.

"My biggest thrill in teaching comes when students see
the connection between what we're talking about in class
and what they'll be doing in a classroom of their own."

"The kids don't look the same, the chairs aren't

in neat little rows. For new teachers, responding

to the diversity in today's classrooms can be

overwhelming. Our students are learning to

create their own teaching reality, experimenting

with instructional models that are very different

from the ones they remember."

Dr. Brenda Shook

Chair, Department of Psychology

everal models of human and animal brains teeter on
overflowing bookcases and adorn the walls of Brenda
Shook's office; a painting of a rat's skull hangs in a
handsome wooden frame near her desk. The results of a
BYOB (Build Your Own Brain) class assignment sit on
tables and chairs — brains rendered metaphorically or more
literally, in stained glass, in papiermache, in clay.

She has long been fascinated with the overlap of
physiology and psychology; after earning her Ph.D. in
physiological psychology at Brandeis University in 1982,
Shook did postdoctoral fellowships at UC Davis and
UCLA, focusing on neuroanatomy. Her current research
examines the impact of injury on fetal brain development.

Shook's sheer joy in the attainment of knowledge is
something she seeks to pass on to her students.

"Mount St. Mary's is a place with extraordinary
collective dedication among the faculty — devotion to
student learning is what we're about," Shook affirms.
"Women have so much to contribute in the sciences. What I
want to convey to the young women I teach is that with
education and skills, they can and will excel — regardless
of what the odds are."

"There has been a tremendous explosion of
knowledge, new technologies that are accelerating
what we can do in science and medicine. But the

big question is, still: Are we smart enough to
understand our own brains?"

At the benefit performance of the new Andrew Lloyd-Webber smash musical Sunset Blvd. are (L to R) Gail and John Sullivan, with Sister
Karen. More than 700 MSMC supporters attended the gala event, many dining at Harper's after the show with director Trevor Nunn and
members of the cast.

We are grateful to those who have given the gift of time to
the College — who have volunteered for FANS (Friends and
Alumnae Network System), the phonathon, the alumnae
scholarship luncheon, the family picnic; or who have
represented the College at inaugurations or spoken at the
career panels for students.

Joan M. Cho

Assistant Professor, Department of Nursing

After teaching large nursing classes at a California State
University for several years, Joan M. Cho decided that a
smaller college community would allow her to make a
bigger difference in the lives of her students.

The assistant professor of nursing started teaching at
Mount St. Mary's College in 1974, and is well-known for
emphasizing the role of critical thinking skills — both in the
classroom, and in her students' clinical experiences.

Cho attended Indiana University, where she earned a
bachelor's degree in nursing in 1962 and a master's degree
in 1967. She also did post-graduate coursework at UCLA.
At MSMC she teaches the introductory classes in Roy
Adaptation Model Nursing Theory, and nursing practicum

She is one of the contributing authors to the Roy
Adapatation Model nursing textbook and its workbook.
She also has developed a comprehensive tool designed for a
beginning-level implementation of the Adaptation Model
nursing process.

"Medical technology is constantly changing, and with the
changes come specialized skills. But by encouraging my
students to think through solutions, I hope to build an
attitude that will be the foundation for their future nursing

"I like to probe a sludent's thinking process. As

nurses, they must constantly ask questions of

themselves as they make many critical decisions

involving their patients' welfare."

Dr. Maurice Hamington

Assistant Professor,
Department of Business Administration

leaching hasn't always been Maurice Hamington's full-
time occupation. After earning his bachelor's degree in
business from Loyola Marymount University and his
master's of business administration from the University
of Southern California, he worked for the American Red
Cross and Best Foods, Inc., as a human resource
specialist. While teaching in the evenings at Pasadena
City College, he began to pursue a master's degree in
religious studies at MSMC.

"I found a stimulating camaraderie in the academic
community that I didn't find in business," says Hamington.
"Encouragement from our own religious studies
department, as well as the community feeling created by the
students in my classes, inspired me to go into education
full-time." That brought him to teaching at MSMC, and
allowed him to continue his education at USC. He recently
defended his dissertation, "The Renegotiation of Religious
Imagery: Mary and Catholic Feminist Ethics," and now
holds his Ph.D. in social ethics.

"The environment at MSMC affords unique freedoms,
such as creating a new class like my 'Women's Issues in
Business and Economics,'" says Hamington. He explains
that his young daughter Rosemary has been a catalyst
for his interest in women's studies. "Women face unique
challenges in the classroom and the workplace. As a
teacher, I have the opportunity to help my students find a
voice and then learn how to use it."

Hamington's wife, Stephanie, is the coordinator of
academic advisement on the Chalon campus.

"I always work to improve my craft as a teacher,
continuing to learn from my students as well as my
colleagues on the faculty," Hamington says.

"When I begin a class, I like to say 'We're all about to
go on a journey together.'"

"I'm constantly being challenged and

revitalized by my students' energy in the

Sister Mary Williams

Chair, Department of English

tier first fall semester as a faculty member was marked by
the trauma and tragedy of the 1961 Bel Air fire — a time
that Williams recalls vividly. All of her memories of the last
30-plus years in the English department are intensely
remembered, fueled by the two-way flow of energy she
creates in the classroom.

Williams says continuing changes in approaches to
methodology and course content have stimulated great
growth in her as a teacher. "I do much more participative
learning, so that students really become involved with the
subject matter," says Williams, whose literature classes
often provide students with their first serious exposure to
Shakespeare. "Once they get over being afraid of it, they
become attuned to the excitement of recognizing the human
truths. They really start to own it," she explains.

Reading and writing are woven into the history of the
Williams family. Her parents edited and published a weekly
newspaper, The Pasco Herald, which she'd helped out on
before going off to The College of St. Catherine. She was
awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to France after her
graduation in 1952, and later earned a master's degree and
her Ph.D. at Stanford; she did her post-doctoral work at
Oxford University and Stratford, England.

Williams approaches academe with remarkable relish —
serving on many key committees and, recently, chairing the
self-study for the 10-year WASC accreditation.

"This is an exciting time for the department, and for
Mount St. Mary's," Williams says. "Our enrollment is
growing and we're starting to move toward adding a
significant component — an emphasis in professional
writing. It's a good department, and we are blessed with
good students."

"The incentive at Mount St. Mary's for creative
growth as a teacher is an enticement that draws a

lot of wonderful people to our faculty. We're a

small enough community that we can really make

our ideas and goals work."

Catherine Lies

1954 to 1993

The MSMC community was saddened by the death of
Catherine Lies on December 18, 1993. Lies was a lecturer
in the physical therapy department from 1991 to 1993,
and served as head volleyball coach in 1989 and 1991.
"Cathy was the ultimate optimist," says Kari Wolfe,
director of the MSMC athletics program. "During her
more than five years of battling cancer, she always
thought of others first, and constantly tried to comfort,
inspire, and support other young women like herself."

Lies received a bachelor's degree in physical education
at Southern Illinois University in 1977, and a master's
degree in physical education at the University of New
Mexico in 1980. She continued her studies at MSMC
and earned a second bachelor's degree in physical
therapy in 1990.

During her illness, Lies generously shared many of her
views of life and death with friends. "Each of you has
helped me shape my world, my life; each of you is a
piece of the puzzle, bringing unique characteristics and
spirit to it," she wrote.

She will be remembered for her loving concern for
others, and the energy and joy with which she lived her
39 years.

Planned Giving

t.M ar f$

Planned giving
typically evolves
out of estate and
financial planning
and generally
requires the
assistance of
professionals. It is

implemented through wills and living trusts; other
devices include endowed memorial gifts, annuities, life
insurance policies, retirement plans, and charitable
remainder/lead trusts. All forms of planned giving
provide one or more types of tax deductions; the savings
are particularly helpful when appreciated property is

From the 1960s to the present, MSMC has received
over $12 million through planned gifts. Especially
noteworthy have been gifts made through trusts by Alice
and Richard Aldworth and Jose Drudis-Biada.

Planned giving can help you make a larger gift than
you ever thought possible while at the same time allowing
you to fulfill your own estate and tax planning goals.

To honor and thank donors for remembering MSMC,
the Heritage Society was established in 1992.

Find a Need and Fill It!

Jf you were to ask Helen Reimann Wood '46 for advice
about where to focus your philanthropy, she would
quickly quote U.S. industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and say,
"Find a need and fill it!" That simple yet practical
philosophy is exactly what led to the creation of the
Donald J. Wood Foundation, and ultimately the Helen
Reimann Wood Scholarship at MSMC.

The mother of three sons and a daughter, Wood and
her family know what it means to have a need. Daughter
Kathleen has been developmentally disabled since birth
and, as in most families, great effort has gone into
helping the one most challenged. But the Wood family
didn't stop there. With their daughter's future in mind,
the Woods formed the non-profit Donald J. Wood
Foundation, dedicated to helping the developmentally
disabled. Over the years, the Foundation has helped
many service agencies in a variety of ways.

Ihe Wood family ot home in Oakland, California.

In 1988, the Foundation's officers decided to distribute
its remaining funds to organizations involved with
disabled people. The Woods turned to their alma maters,
MSMC and St. Mary's College, where they established
much-needed endowments in the departments of
graduate study in the field of special education.

Each year at MSMC, the Foundation's scholarship
helps fill financial needs for one MSMC student
specializing in the education of the developmentally
disabled. "The motivation for my commitment to the
Mount comes from the fact that I never really left my
college," says Wood. "The great friends I gained created
a life-long attachment for me. What I learned there,
combined with an interest in providing future security
for our daughter, has led to a mission that includes many
others in our community." i
